Birding NSW Bird Surveys

Birding NSW come to Grenfell twice a year as part of Birding NSW’s important bird and biodiversity area surveys. Grenfell is their chosen site as it is part of the South West Slopes Key Biodiversity Area, otherwise known as one of ‘nature’s hotspots’.

In small groups, surveys are conducted in Autumn and Spring across 30 sites on both public and private land. The group generally conduct their surveys on a weekend, with Saturday being the main survey day. They meet for a barbecue on a private property on Saturday evening. Members of the community are then welcome to join the birding group on the Sunday at Company’s Dam to observe and record birds.

Birding NSW will be conducting their twentieth Bird Survey Weekend around Grenfell on Saturday 19th – Sunday 20th March 2022.
New surveyors are always welcome but must be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccinations.

If you would like to join the official survey on Saturday 19th or the casual bird walk on Sunday 20th or would like more information, please contact Elisabeth Karplus on

For those who like to plan ahead, the September 2022 surveys will be held on 23-25 September 2022.
